How does insurance work on a rental car? Some questions answered

bigislandjeeprenta

We often get folks ask : "How does insurance work on a rental car"

and "why can't i use my credit card insurance?"

So here's the scoop-

Credit card trip insurance is secondary to your primary auto insurance and if you read the fine print, usually doesn't cover damage to other things and people (god forbid you accidently hit someone on a bicycle!)

This is why you want full coverage insurance on your personal vehicle - this transfers over to a rental car. - this is the case if your car is insured in USA.

In Canada, you will likely have to add rental car insurance to your policy - I've had customers tell me they logged into an app and added it for $20

Question: So what if I don't have full coverage on my car?

Answer: Add it! you can always remove it later, no biggie. While you are at it, lower your deductible to the lowest amount you can. You can change it later,

Adding the extra insurance to your car is a whole lot cheaper than buying that extra coverage at a rental counter.

in any case, do book your rental care with a credit card with trip insurance if you can. That will help with minor incidents (tires, etc) and also will usually cover your insurance deductible.
